Sharpening Guide

Sharpening images has always been a tricky operation as the line between sharpness and artificial results is very thin.
Here is the same image sharpened with >Filter>Sharpen>Sharpen Filter.
Here is the same image sharpened with >Filter>Sharpen>Sharpen More Filter.
Here is the same image sharpened with >Filter>Sharpen>Sharpen Edge Filter.
Here is the same image sharpened with >Filter>Sharpen>Unsharp Mask Filter.

Two-Step Technique

1. Use the Unsharp Mask
(Amount=150%, Radius=0.5)

2. Use the Unsharp Mask
(Amount=150 to 400%, Radius=0.5)

Lab Color Technique

1. Change the Color Mode to Lab Color

2. Select the Lightness Channel in the Channels Menu.

3. Use the Unsharp Mask.

4. Select All Channels in the Channels Menu.

High Pass Filter Technique

1. Make a duplicate of your image.

2. Use >Filter>Other>High Pass (Adjust the Radius until you get clean highlights but no color bleeding.

3. Change the Layer Mode to Overlay.

Double Adjustment Layers Technique

1. Make a duplicate of your image.

2. Use the Unsharp Mask
(Amount=500%, Radius=1.0)

3. Change the Layer Mode to Darken and adjust the Opacity until you get enough definition on the dark areas.

4. Make a duplicate of the sharpened Layer.

5. Change the Layer Mode to Lighten and adjust the Opacity until you get enough definition on the light areas.
